The same cameras, watching for smoke
The observatory's cameras take a frame every few minutes for the daily timelapse. Those same frames can be run through a smoke-detection model: when it strings together several frames showing a plume, an email goes out with the picture, so whoever receives it can look and decide. Nothing else needs installing.
It is an add-on that makes use of cameras already in place, not a dedicated wildfire-detection system. It does not replace forest watch duty or the emergency services: it sees what falls within the frame, in daylight, and it is always a person who confirms that it was fire.
